Attorney General asks high court to stop vote of no confidence

Attorney General and Justice Minister Pila Niningi has revealed to the media he has filed a Supreme Court Section 19 reference seeking opinion of the high court that a vote of no confidence should not be moved after a general election.

He told the media after successfully objecting the reference by the opposition yesterday.

Mr Niningi said he will be requesting his lawyers to liaise with courts and expedite the hearing.

He is seeking opinions from the high court on Section 145 which deals with election of a Prime Minister and Section 63 of the OLIPPAC specifies that after a general election, the party with a majority of MPs elected is invited to form a government.

Mr Niningi said the intent is that they should serve a full Parliament term.

He has alleged it appears politicians with vested interests are using money to lure MPs and topple a legitimate government democratically elected by a majority.
