Port Moresby looks clean as vendors and loiters decamp

Funny but true. Port Moresby city is clean than ever.

The converging public places where betel nut and food are traded is empty.

Well thanks to the visit by the Pope Francis slated for September.

The city of pretenders and actors yet keep maintaining the tag name, indeed with its actions.

The city and country needs to get out of this mentality of pretending and ensure the culture of cleanliness and avoidance of street vending is stopped.

PNG Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika has during the 2024 legal year opening condemned the actions of street vending.

He said these are offences under the summary offences act and police and the municipal government has to proactively enforce it.

For now the city streets and parks where trade takes place appears empty and is indeed very clean.

Would the side effects be increase in crimes as people find means to make ends meet?

We need a permanent solution to this and certainly, street vending must end.

Stop this culture. It's introduced and imported and when we do not set it up and opetationalise it well, it becomes an eyesore and a place where it feeds and instigated crime.
